This note is to explain how you can make use of the Spiral Graphics' Free Genetica Viewer program to generate textures with Resolution Independence, seamlessness, effect maps such as bump map and specular map. The generated textures will then be used in Artlantis and compiled as Artlantis Shader.

Let's understand what is Genetica Viewer before trying out the texture generation.

What is Genetica Viewer

Genetica Viewer is a free and convenient way to access texture files that have been saved in the Genetica texture format (GTX).

Why to have GTX format

There is few reasons why the textures are saved in this GTX format.
    • Resolution Independence

With Genetica Viewer, you can take full advantage of the resolution-independent nature of the Genetica texture format. Unlike bitmap textures which are set at a given resolution, GTX files can be rendered at any resolution up to 2048 x 2048 using the free Genetica Viewer.

    • Diffuse Map, Bump Map and Specular Map
The Genetica texture format supports many effect maps that can be used in Artlantis Studio, such as bump and specular. The free Genetica Viewer will allow you to access these effect maps.

    • Seamlessness
Genetica textures will always be perfectly seamless, even after making the adjustments described above, such as changing the zoom level or re-randomizing the texture.

    • Randomizability
At the click of a mouse, Genetica Viewer will re-randomize any GTX file while retaining its overall characteristics, as if it were cut from a different part of the same source material. All effect maps embedded within the texture will automatically be adjusted to match the new version.

Let's begin to create the texture and maps necessary for the Artlantis.

Step 1: Download and Install Free Genetica Viewer

You need to download and install the Genetica Viewer program from the Spiral Graphics website at http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/viewer/download_viewer.htm.

Step 2: Choose the Category and Texture

1. In the Start tab, choose Category, eg.Path.

2. Choose theTexture, eg. Follow the Red Brick Road

Note: This will take you to Texture tab.

Step 3: Adjust Parameters and render resolution

In the Texture tab, you can see the diffuse map at the center, and bump map and specular map at the left column.

1. Adjust theBrightness, Contrast, Intensity, Hue, Saturation, Scale, seed parameters.

2. Choose theRender Resolution.

3. ClickRender button.

Note: Don't forget to turn on Anti-Aliasing, Render Color Only, Render Effect Maps.
Note: This will take you to Results tab.

Step 3: Save Diffuse Map (Texture)

Artlantis Shader is in xsh file extension. It is constituted by several map files:
  • diffuse Map (i.e. the colorful texture) in *_d.jpg
  • Bump Map in *_b.jpg
  • Specular Map in *_s.jpg
  • Normal map in *_n.jpg     *I checked the Genetica Viewer, seems like there is no normal map given, filterforge.net does offer.

When saving the shader, the saving process will save the maps in accordance to the Artlantis standard naming convention, like _d.jpg, _b.jpg and _s.jpg. So, to avoid too many copies of same images under different names, you will save the rendered textures/maps in accordance to Artlantis Naming Standard.

1. From the dropdown, chooseTexture (Color Only).

2. Click Save button.

Note: You will be prompted to save the texture into your local drive.

3. Save this diffuse map as Follow the Red Brick Road_d.jpg. This is to follow Artlantis Naming Stardard.

Step 4: Save Bump Map

Genetica calls Bump Map as Height Map.
