I teach Artlantis Studio and AutoCAD in my country, Malaysia. I used to subscribe to cadsymbols.com and used many of dwgs in that website. The glass C11_0317.dwg and bottle C11_0320.dwg, both come from there. How we can make use of those dwgs and merge into our model in Artlantis?

 

The tutorial below is one of the tutorials I prepare for my Artlantis Studio 3 Training. This time, i will repeat the same tutorial but in Artlantis Studio 4 now. There are some differences.

 

We will take in the 3d models (glass C11_0317.dwg, bottle C11_0320.dwg) from AutoCAD file (dwg), we will then use the powerful texturing and rendering features of Artlantis Studio 4 to apply shaders to the 3d model to simulate glasses and bottle, add lighting to have more realistic effect, and save the rendering work as Artlantis file format (atl).

 

1. In Artlantis Studio, open the C11_0317.dwg.

 

From the File menu, choose Open to display Open dialog box. Choose C11_0317.dwg.

Note: The c11_0321.dwg is downloaded from CadSymbols.com. To get the right unit measurement used in the file, it is best practice to open up c11_0321.dwg using its native modelling Tool i.e. AutoCAD to check the unit measurement for this drawing. So that you can choose the right Scale Factor in the Open dialog box. In this step, i purposely make a mistake to let you see the problem later.

 

Click Open.

 

Note: The glass is shown in Render Window. Looked like no hope on this drawing, but, let Artlantis to do the magic.

 

Note: The reason of brightness is because there is a strong spot light inside by default. There is no ground on it, causing no shadow.

2. In the Perspective View, associate the Heliodon to the view.

Note: The background suddenly becomes dark. It is not an error. It is because the time is at night.

3. Switch to Heliodon Inspector, set the time to be 14:00 to brighten up the scene.

Ensure Shadow checkbox is not checked.

3. Back to Perspective View, set the background of the scene to white.

4. Add the Ground.

 

From the Windows, choose Scene Informations.

Check Infinite Group checkbox and set the Altitude to -0.01m.

5. Reduce the spotlight power.

 

Switch to Light Inspector, set the power to be 25.

Remember to turn on Shadow.

6. Assign parquet02 shader to the ground floor.

 

In the Catalog Window, navigate to the Shaders > Parquet folder, drag Parquet02. xsh shader to the ground in the Render Window.

Note: Drag the Shader to the Inifinite Ground Object in the Render Window. Alternatively, you can drag the Shader to the Infinite Ground of the Shader List.

Notice that the glass is relatively small compared to the parquet floor. This indicates that the Scale Factor you used to import dwg model in step 1 is wrongly set. To overcome this issue, you have 2 options. First option is to redo the whole thing and choose the correct scale factor. Second option is to just reduce the scale of the parquet floor to match the size of the glass in the next step.

 

7.  Readjust the size of the parquet02.

 

Switch to Shader Inspector, choose the Infinite Ground Material : parquet02 item in the View List, set the size to 0.2m.

Note: The sizes of the parquet floor and glass are in proportion now.

8. Increase smoothness of the glass.

 

In the View List, choose the glass material (C11_0317). Under the Material ID parameters section, set the Smoothness to maximum.

Note: Alternatively, you can click the object and hold a while until the object is highlight, ensure you select the right object, and then release the click.

9. Apply Neon Glass shader to the glass material (C11_0317).

 

In the Catalog Window, navigate to the Shaders > a Surface folder, and drag Neon Glass shader to the C11_0317 item in the View List.

In the Shader Inspector, set the Transparency value to Glass.
