Applying Tire Texture

As you can see there is no texture and no bump effect on the tires. To make the tires looked more realistic, you can apply texture to the tire and increase the bump effect.

 

Note: You can go to Artlantis Studio tab below CemTech's wall to download the necessary files for this tutorial including this Tire Texture, tyre.jpg.

1. Click the tire and hold a while to see which layer containing the tires material.

 

Note: Confirm tire layer containing the tires material. If it is in Default layer, then you are unlucky. :(

2. Ensure tire layer is selected in the View List, click Insert Image tool.

3. Select the tyre.jpg from your local disk.

 

Note: tyre.jpg is listed underneath tire layer.

Note: tyre.jpg texture can be seen but small.

4. In the View List, select the tyre.jpg. Set both horizontal and vertical Repeat (Rep.) to true. This will tile the tyre.jpg on both direction.

 

Set Wrapping to Y. Cylindrical. This will wrap the texture cylindrically on the tire.

 

Set the Bump to max. This will allow us to see the bump effect of the texture.

 

Set the Transparent to near max. Why? You just need to apply bump effect only, the color of the texture shall not be the focus.

5. In the View List, select tire layer. The surface of the type is not smooth. So, set Smoothness to Max.

Choose Mat Varnish. This preset value controls the Reflection and Shininess of the tire surface and to make it look like mat material.

Note: The tire looked real now because of the bump effect on it.

Applying the Shader to Body

 

You can see that the surface of the car body is not smooth after import. Let's smooth the surface.

 

6. In the Preview Window, click the Body, then identify where the layer containing the body in the List View.

7. Drag the Smoothness slider to max.

Note: The surface becomes smooth now.

Expert Shader is an excellent shader that can can create metal effect. So, i plan to put Expert Shader to the Car Body.

 

8. Drag the Expert Shader from Catalog Window onto the car body.

9. In the Shader Inspector, set the Diffuse color to Red 10, Green 8, Blue 10. For the Reflection color, set it to the same color first, then drag the brightness to higher value.

Note: Increase the brightness of reflection color.

10. Drag the Brushed Aluminium Shader from the Catalog Window onto the Wheels.

Check the Mix checkbox to blend the shader with black.

 

There is a small round part on the center of the wheel, located at Wheel1 layer. (For Mac) In the Shader List, Option + drag the Brushed Aluminium on the Wheel layer to Wheel1 layer.

Applying Shader on Mud Flap

 

As you can see the Mud Flap surface are not smooth. If you click the mud flap, you will notice that it is under default layer. Again, problem like car plate in part I ?! Yes, it is! Let's use polygon selection tool to quickly assign the material to a new layer.

 

11. In the Shader List, click Add Layer.

12. Name the layer as Mud Flap.

13. Turn on Polygon Selection mode, see 1. Use Magic Selection, see 2.

14. In the Preview Window, rotate your mouse wheel to zoom out, and click both mud flap area. You suppose to do 4, i just do 2 here.

15. Ensure Mud Flap layer is selected in the View List, click Apply button, see 3 in the picture above. Choose Apply the selected material checkbox and click OK. Click Yes to confirm.

 

16. Set the smoothness of Mud Flap layer to max.

Note: Mud Flap surface is smooth now.

 

 

17. In the Preview Window, click Back button to return back to previous zoom.

18. In the Catalog Window, drag Shaders > A Surface > Carbon Fiber to the Mud Flap Layer, to apply the shader.
